Tips for an Eco-Friendly Beach Wedding

Beachfront, eco-friendly weddings are possible at our resort in Oxnard, CA

Congratulations! You've decided on a beach wedding, one of nature's most incredible settings. You and your spouse can say your vows incorporating an ocean as big as your love for each other and a sustainable environment that belongs to future generations. Going green is not just a trend, but a starting point to planning your wedding. It's a smart choice and a meaningful one, as well.

Being ecologically-minded doesn't mean restrictive, plain and boring. Modern eco-weddings are extremely chic, creative and absolutely memorable. Beach weddings happen to be our specialty! Here are a few recommendations we've put together for planning an eco-friendly beach wedding:

Keep it local, green and in-season: Local for us is Ventura County in California; however, you can apply the following tips by looking for environmentally-friendly vendors in your area.

  • Flowers – In-season wild flowers that keep the local eco-system in check can also make a beautiful sustainable bouquet. McGrath Family Farms, located in Camarillo, are local organic growers of flowers and produce, the perfect place for farm-fresh flowers. The mild sunny California climate brings some of the loveliest flowers throughout the year, such as Sunflowers, Caspia, Tuberrose, Callalilly, and Lavender just to name a few.

  • Food – Sustainable and local produce helps reduce the carbon footprint generated when food has to travel long distances to arrive on your plate. Here at Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort, we participate in the Farm-to-Table program. This means we buy organic produce and meat from local area farmers in Ventura County. This supports our farming community as well as provides our guests with the freshest and most flavorful meals.

A “green” wedding dress: There's a rising trend of eco-wedding dress designers that work in sustainable fabrics such as organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, or recycled fabrics that are given new life in the form of your wedding dress. Another option is to buy a fabulous vintage dress or have one locally made. Bride Boutique in Los Angeles has some amazing vintage and handmade dresses that are also budget friendly.

Bridesmaid dress wearability:  A bridesmaid’s dress is also a once-in-a-lifetime dress, because it's usually worn once. Your bridesmaids will most likely wear the dress again if they choose it themselves. To keep continuity in design, select classic colors or style themes that would be appropriate for your wedding and for wearing beyond the big day. This is a much more sustainable option, and the least wasteful both financially and materially. Your bridesmaids will thank you for it!

Plants as decor: Plants add a fresh element to your decor. They're alive and so important to cleaning the air by soaking up the carbon dioxide and other pollutants while releasing oxygen. Choose plants that are native to your area and can be replanted after the ceremony. Another option is succulents as decor, which look unique, modern and require very little water. More ideas can be found at The Knot.

Save trees, go digital: Share as much information digitally as possible, such as ceremony program, registry, location, etc. Paper invites and hardcopies can be printed on recycled post-consumer waste paper. To help you create captivating evites, there's an online company called Green Envelope that specializes in digital wedding invites.

Celebrate with care: You can have a spectacular wedding send-off with eco-friendly items such as birdseed bombs, flower petals, non-toxic bubbles, and ribbon wands, just to name a few. Recommended items are those that won't pollute, contaminate, or be released into the ocean's eco-system. Fear not, there are many eco-friendly alternatives.

Organic wine and spirits: This will keep everyone in good spirits! Look for Certified Organic whenever possible as it will be produced without the use of toxic pesticides that are damaging to the environment and the health of the workers. Local is also a good way to go, having less distance to travel and supporting local wineries. We're lucky to have many quality local wineries here in Ventura County.

Eco-chandeliers: You didn't think we'd forget to include that chandelier you've always dreamed of at your wedding, did you? There are eco-friendly options, too! Look for chandeliers made with natural elements and recycled materials, or a vintage garden chandelier set with mini solar lights – the possibilities are endless.
